My favorite childhood fairytale was definitely A Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen. The Disney version was pretty but it lacked the definitive bittersweet taste of the original. It taught me that no matter even though you sacrifice everything, it's never going to be enough. And you cannot expect love without getting hurt.

Tomoyo Daidouji is a reckless driver. Her boyfriend couldn’t imagine that she has it in her. She loves the open road, the wind in her hair and the summer heat that penetrates their tinted glass windows. He feels her excitement as she steps on the gas and grabs the brake.

They are on a road trip to visit Tomoyo’s great-grandfather in his summer estate. She wants him to meet the other man in her life. Kyouya Ohtori doesn’t know which scares him most: the patriarch with his famous glares or the heiress with a need for speed.

Kyouya looks sideways.

Kyouya took Tomoyo to Cannes for their honeymoon. It was a thoughtful gesture because he knew her fascination for films, photographs and fashion. They spent a week frolicking under the blue summer skies, brown palm trees and the vibrant sea. It was the best gift that she ever received.

On their last day, the newlyweds walked along the seashore with linked hands. She wasn’t shy with her demonstrations of love so Kyouya was subject to her kisses to his embarrassment and pride. His wife genuinely loved him. He was grateful for her affection so he resolved to do whatever it was to keep her happy.

They sat down by the sea to feel the waves tickling their toes. His wife had tanned considerably under the summer sun. She was beautiful in a white dress and a straw hat with a purple ribbon. Her smiles were brighter than sunshine.

Tomoyo drew a heart near the shoreline and enclosed their names inside. He frowned. “It will be washed away by the next tide.”
She turned to him, smiling. “I don’t mind. Change is the only permanent thing in this world. The drawing is not the point. The sea is. No matter how many days or nights will pass, it will change and stay the same. That’s my love for you.”

Kyouya surprised her when he grabbed her for a long, lingering kiss. Several men playing volleyball hooted and cheered. When he let her go, her cheeks were as red as the sunset. Her blue-violet eyes were the same color as the ocean. He cupped her cheek and stared at her with tenderness that touched her mending heart.

“I will always love you,” stated her husband with as much conviction as he could muster.

“I know,” Tomoyo replied serenely “Our love will always be like the sea."

The rocking chairs are their favorite furniture. They bought it when they were newlyweds with jokes about how they would definitely spend their final days resting their old bones. Such optimism and happiness colored their marriage. So the pair of chairs sat at the front porch throughout the seasons: rain or shine, cold or warm. It is the testament of the unbreakable covenant of their union.

In beautiful summer afternoons like this, husband and wife enjoy the dappled sunlight and the song of the cicadas. No words need to be said. He reads from his books, she knits innumerable sweaters. (She always prepares for the coming winter.) They sometimes babysit their grandchildren and watch them in the yard with serene smiles.

Their marriage lasted for 50 years. Everyone envies them. They are blessed with fortune, fame and family. She thinks it’s wonderful that he lives up to his promise of loving and caring for her until death do they part.

Kyouya gives her a sly smile. He is still so handsome and so debonair in spite of his silver hair. “You’re lovely,” he says softly.

Tomoyo blushes like a girl. You can make a husband out of a host but you can’t take the host out of your husband. She is not startled when he places a hand on top of hers. Blue-violet eyes twinkle at his mischievous smile. She still possessed a girlish beauty that never fails to attract male attention whatever her age. “Thank you.”
They continue to rock together in complete and contented silence.

Her enigma makes him fall in love.

The sun behind her gives her a dark halo and a radiant smile. Tomoyo Ohtori leans over and plants a kiss on his cheek. “Drive,” she orders sweetly. “Drive until we get there.”

Freedom is found on the open road and in the arms in her beautiful sweet soul.

As the last single woman in their group, she is crowned with innocent daisies as the maid of honor. It irritates her placid nature. She is getting impatient. When is it my turn?

The wedding flows smoothly to the reception. To her surprise, a stranger asks for a dance. He is tall, handsome and witty. Her friends are setting her up with the last eligible bachelor.

Next summer, she weds Kyouya Ohtori. She is a blushing bride.
